Lady Gaga's new single 'Applause': What are you expecting?

For those who have missed the sudden slurry of teasers and promotional shots this week, Lady Gaga has a new single coming out very soon

So far, the details of it extend as far as the title - 'Applause' - and its release date of August 19, the same day her third album ARTPOP becomes available for pre-order.

Gaga has also released some brilliant artwork for the single, depicting her as Pierrot - the stock jester character from old Italian theatre.

But what are           you hoping for/expecting from 'Applause'? We've posted our thoughts below.

  • First things first, let's take what we can from the artwork. If we're going to judge the song by its cover - and in today's recession-busting world we really shouldn't but in this case we can't help it - 'Applause' will be a fun and classy if not slightly creepy affair. Also, nothing says effortless like a scribbly font, right?

  • No elaborate backstory or overly philosophical meaning. What made 'Born This Way' (the song) so great was its simplicity, but the confusing backstory about a government-owned alien territory wasn't really to our liking. We're all for a bit of flamboyance, but don't let it overshadow the song.

  • Lots of BPM. Almost two years after her last single 'Marry The Night', we're not here for a ballad.

  • But nothing too fast. We know electronic dance music is the current 'thing' in America that hasn't quite reached the charts, but the rest of the world has been there and done it already.

  • No monsterisms. We know Gaga kick-started the whole idea of giving your fans a collective name, but now we've reached the point of Misha B's 'Aliens' and Nina Nesbitt's 'Nesbians', it's time to move on.

  • Basically, a good old-fashioned pop song would be great. You won't hear us complaining if she returns with a 'Bad Romance' part II, or that elusive sequel to 'Telephone'.

  • Lady Gaga officially releases 'Applause' on August 19, so we'll all be able to hear it in full then. Unless it pops up online early, as these things have a habit of doing sometimes.
